…while dodging traffic, attempting not the get squished along the way?
A leap of faith or more accurately, many leaps of faith have taken me to where I am today. According to dictionary.com a leap of faith “A belief or trust in something intangible or incapable of being proved.” Being in a business with so many variables in play, you do your best to put yourself out there, and from time to time you make that leap of faith when you choose to go with an agent or manager. Now mind you the circumstances leading up to having different agencies to choose from, if you are lucky to have several choices, can be random. I’ve almost always relied on self submissions, regular mail as well as E-mail. The variables of subjectivity are enormous. Whether or not you get funneled into the small list that gets called in to interview can be based on various random variables; Do they represent someone like you already?; Are you the right age group?; Do they feel you have enough or important enough credits?; Do they have room for more clients?; Do they think you are marketable? The list of possible criteria that goes through each agent’s mind is probably much more varied, and the list much longer. Timing can be critical. If you don’t hear back from an agent you are targeting, you need to submit again within a few months. I’ve found that everything is timing, random timing it seems, and synchronous events occurring, which only occur when you take a lot of action and repeatedly take action, and keep changing what type of action you take until you see results. It’s very easy to stop taking action when a set of actions yields no results and leaves you disappointed. There’s the rub. I’m at a crossroads again. I have the opportunity to take a leap of faith again in the next 1 to 2 weeks, and there’s no way of knowing or proving it will be successful. I feel like a leap frog, who’s leg’s keep getting stronger and stronger. I can only move forward, “Fail forward to succeed” if that’s the case, all the while being my own hardest working agent.
